Episdoe 93

Outer noises of engines and tires and brakes filled the air as Amy's door opened.  As it swung shut and silence returned to the inside of the vehicle, an ominous sense came over Miah.  She looked at the faces around her and wondered what would ever be the same after this was all finished.  She wondered if she even knew what she would want to be the same.  Their close quarters certainly gave them things to argue about but it was the security of knowing that at least they were all in the same boat.  Previous times of feeling all alone compelled this to pale in comparison with that fear.  There was no doubt that she would rather have someone to argue with than no one to laugh with at all.

Connor and Gail were murmuring something about whether they would drive through the night or find a place to stay, or pull off on the side of the road to sleep in the car.  Miah appreciated Gail and the fact that she wasn't stuck between two boys all the time because of her presence, but she still had only known her for several days.  She wished that she had gotten stuck with some of her close friends from school, or from the job she worked at.  Or even, as unlikely as it would have been, getting stuck with Gwen, her friend from camp and the instigator of her friendship with Ben, would have been comforting.

It occupied her mind to think of how things could have been, and it passed the time, but it didn't make her current situation much better.  She felt like she was waiting for a death sentence, it was taking so long to get to the police station they were heading for.

Suddenly, a sound shook her from her thoughts and sliced panic into her veins.  Miah sat up straight and looked with terror toward Ben in the driver's seat.

Sirens.
