“What did you do?!?” Gail cried, and Connor winced.
“Don’t be so loud—we don’t know if there are guards around.”
Gail walked over to Ben’s limp form and felt his pulse. She sighed. “He’s alive. I wish you hadn’t hit him so hard, though.”
“He would have just got in our way if I hadn’t,” Connor murmured.
“You don’t know that.” She wouldn’t stop looking at Ben's face.
“He’s one of them, Gail,” Connor sighed, looking at his unconscious form as if it were a dangerous animal.
“But still.” She stood and looked hard into his eyes. “We have to believe we can get him back. Their experiment couldn’t have been perfect.”
“Gail, he—” Her eyes narrowed. Connor sighed. “Okay, okay. I’m just trying to be cautious. I don’t want him turning around and stabbing me in the back if I can help it.”
Gail rolled her eyes. “Let’s just go get Miah and stop arguing.”
“Fine with me.”
Walking past Ben’s still form, they pushed through the darkness, stepping carefully and breathing quietly.
