Her muscles tense in anticipation, Miah peered back over the side of the truck. She jumped when she saw a guard standing but three feet from her head, and he turned, startled. She ducked back down. Shoot, now he’s seen me…what am I going to do?!? She couldn’t peek back again, but listened as the guard walked around to the open side of the truck bed.
“Where’d the other one go?” he asked gruffly, not looking directly at her.
Miah scowled, caught off guard. An enemy guard doesn’t want to kill me? That’s a first. Fine, I’ll talk. “How should I know? He doesn’t tell me anything. Why do you want to know?”
The guard shrugged, and it was more like a shiver; she had the feeling that she disturbed him. Well this is awkward. And creepy. The guard turned and walked a few paces away, muttering under his breath. Miah hugged her arms and looked away, out into the night. There was something she thought she'd heard, faintly and from far away.
“Miah!” she heard, much closer this time, and she turned, afraid to believe it was true.
“…Connor?”
Gail’s voice called as Miah finally saw them. “Miah! Oh, thank goodness!”
The guard spun around, aiming his pistol. “Got you now.”
“No!” Miah screamed, and Connor pulled Gail to the ground as the bullet punched the air over their heads.
