When they reached the road, Miah looked around. The moon was setting, and its light cast eerie shadows as it approached the horizon. It was becoming harder and harder to see where she was going, and the car's black color made it almost invisible. The darkest part of the night was upon them.
“There it is,” Gail whispered, pointing.
The three of them hurried across the asphalt to a waiting car, which Connor and Gail climbed into without question. Miah hesitated, asking, “Who’s driving? Where are we going?”
“Away!” Connor encouraged. “Get in, quick!”
“But—” Miah started.
A voice rasped behind them, “Wait!”
Miah spun around, her hand still on the car door.
Ben climbed the hill and stumbled toward them, an arm outstretched. “Take me with you!”
“Ben?” Miah gasped.
