As the day progressed, they made their way through the Appalachians and down into the pollen-laden forests of Georgia. Ben, Connor, and Amy were miserable with itchy, red eyes and running noses. Miah was still suffering from a cold, with bad drainage that hadn't been made any better with her cry. Their suffering would have continued through the night if Connor hadn't suggested the only sensible thing to do.
As Amy pulled into the parking lot of a Walgreens pharmacy, she turned around. "If we bought Sudafed for Miah, as well as allergy stuff, we'd have to show ID."
Ben frowned. "That's not good."
"No. It isn't. I'm not sure I even exist to the US government," Amy murmured. "But anyway, the rest of you are counted missing, so it'd allert the authorities to your whereabouts. That's what we want to avoid. I think I should go in, out of all of us."
"I don't even have my ID," Miah sighed, folding her arms. Getting captured wasn't her favorite thing in the world to do, especially when she didn't have time to gather her belongings to bring with her.
"Did you say that the police had us all posted as missing? I didn't think that Ben and I were really drawing that much attention. Miah, sure, because she was actually still living at home with her parents."
Amy sighed. "That's beside the point. They could connect you to her, and if they find you here, well...you never know what they could conclude. It'd be safest if I went. Just trust me."
Miah was having a bit of a problem with that, but she didn't say anything. Amy still hadn't earned her trust, and it didn't look like she was meaning to stick around to gain it, either.
"Well, looks like you're the one." Ben gestured toward the entrance to the pharmacy. "Good luck."
