She was so tired. She’d been running and afraid and desperate for far too long. He had to help her. He had to do something.
“What are we going to do?” Miah sighed.
Connor slowly let go and looked down into her teary eyes. “I’ll figure out something...”
“Amy isn’t who she says she is,” she sniffed. “I don’t trust her...”
“You’re not just letting your feelings for Ben get in the way?”
Miah frowned and a spark of anger flicked into her eyes. “I’m not jealous of her, if that’s what you’re trying to say.”
“You wish Ben thought of you the way he does her, though.”
“Why are you analyzing me? I like to keep my feelings to myself.”
“I’m sorry.” Connor sighed and rubbed his forehead.
Miah swallowed and looked away. “I made this mess.”
He sighed and shook his head. “No, you didn’t. You were dragged into it. You shouldn't think like that, it's unhealthy.”
Miah shrugged, rubbing her arms. “If I hadn’t been here, you and Ben might have gone unnoticed. You might have been able to live normal lives.”
“You know they would have found us anyway. Don’t lie to yourself. None of this is your fault; it’s our fault for bringing you into it.” Connor lifted her chin. “And I’ll get you out of it.”
She looked so afraid. It tore at him to see her like this...and she didn’t even believe him yet.
