Episode 9
Miah sat down. Connor paced back and forth, and she looked up at him. “If they don’t find us down that tunnel, they’ll be back, won’t they?”
“Yes. We need to get away from here, but I don’t know where we could go without being followed. I just don’t know anywhere we could hide that they couldn’t find us; we knew about this place from them.”
He continued to pace the floor, and Miah stood. “What about Ben’s car and yours? I don’t want to drive alone, especially if we get chased again…” She shuddered.
“Hm…” The light from the flashlight cast his shadow on the wall.
Miah crossed her arms. “What if we just leave and think as we go? They might be back any minute.”
Connor stopped pacing, sighing. “You’re right…” He glanced around the room and found a large wooden chest. Opening it quickly, he took two objects from it and closed the lid. Tossing one to Miah, he muttered, “Just in case.”
It was a handgun. “Put it in your pocket. It’s not loaded right now.”
She gingerly slipped the gun into her pocket and watched as he took several cartridges from a cabinet. “Put these in your other pocket,” he said, handing two to her.
“I don’t even know how to use a gun,” she protested.
“You can at least look like you know how to. Then maybe they’ll think twice before attacking you. And besides, without a gun you’re basically helpless.”
Stuffing the cartridges in her pocket with a huff, she rolled her eyes, wishing she’d never met this guy.
“Let’s go.” Lifting the trapdoor, he jumped down. “Come on,” he beckoned with the flashlight.
“Jump?” she asked incredulously.
“Yeah.”
Miah sat on the edge of the hole and closed her eyes. He caught her as she jumped down in a dizzying moment and she hurried down the passageway after him, a bit shaken. “Which car will we take?” she panted as they ran along.
“We’ll take mine, maybe come back for Ben’s later.”
Miah kept running along, frowning.
