A girl in a white lab coat with unkempt blonde hair walked in and looked at the two of them, and then back at her clipboard. She seemed to hide behind it, as if it could protect her from the prisoners. She appeared to be their age, possibly younger. Miah stared at her, surprised that such a young person could survive in a horrible place like this.
The door stood open. Connor took a step toward it, but the girl suddenly got braver and looked him in the eye. “Don’t try to get out,” she said, shaking her head. “It’s a bad idea.”
“What happened to Ben?” Miah asked.
She looked back down at her clipboard, again shrinking into a nervous girl in a lab coat. “The experiment didn’t work out the way it was supposed to...they’re adjusting the formula. Your friend is in a coma.”
Shocked, Miah tried to stand, but pain shot up her leg and she fell back to the floor. She had almost forgotten her injury. “Can we see him?”
“I don’t think so,” the girl answered. “You’re supposed to be kept here until they need another subject for the next experiment.”
Connor crossed his arms, letting out a frustrated sigh. “I knew it.”
“But I don’t think they’ll be ready for a long time,” she hastily added. “It took them a long time to get up to this point, and they’d used mostly rats and alley cats in prior experiments. They didn't expect any of this to happen; they’ll have to start over from scratch almost.”
“Who are you?” Miah asked.
“I'm just one of their geneticists...” The girl looked down at her clipboard and swallowed. “I wish I could help you.”
“Could you?”
She shook her head. “I couldn’t possibly. They’d suspect anything I tried to do.”
Connor stepped forward, intimidation on his mind. “But tell me something. Are we being filmed or recorded in here?”
“Oh no,” she answered, holding her clipboard to her chest and giving a slight smile, “this room isn’t watched in any way. If they had wanted to watch you, you would have known.”
Miah asked, “But what’s your name?”
The girl sighed and looked at her. “Gail. My name is Gail.”
Miah smiled a little, and was about to say something when Gail looked at her watch. “Oh, I have to go!” she exclaimed and ran out of the room.
The door shut and locked, and Connor stood staring at it.
