“Connor—” Her footsteps were too wide, too quick, and she stumbled into him. He put his hands out to catch her and asked, “Are you alright? Tell me, what happened?” He tried to look into her eyes, but she was having trouble focusing.
She was breathing heavily and didn’t seem to understand what he was saying. She squeezed her eyes tight and tried to pull away.
“Miah—” He sighed and pulled her close, and tried to soften his tone. “What’s wrong?”
She took a shaky breath and whispered, “I don’t know. But I can walk. And it hurts.”
“You can walk?” Connor wasn’t thinking clear enough, and he took a deep breath. “But Miah, your legs are fine, your...” He stopped. “You can walk...and you couldn’t before...” He frowned and looked at her face. “Miah. How can you walk?”
Tears were welling up in her eyes, but she still didn't understand. “They put these things on them. I can’t get them off. And my head—it hurts when I move my legs.”
“There were things up on the wall in that room, I thought they were guns or equipment...but they weren't.”
Miah tugged slightly, confused and tired. “Connor, what's going on...”
“They replaced your legs.” He let go of her and she swayed, and then caught her balance. Miah looked down at her feet.
“Replaced my…” her voice trailed off. She swallowed. “What?”
“Replaced my…” her voice trailed off. She swallowed. “What?”
“They made mechanical legs and replaced them with yours. It must have been part of their plan.”
Still not comprehending the entirety of what he was saying, she sighed, “Connor, we have to find Ben...we're getting out of here, right?” She looked up at him.
He looked into her eyes. “Miah…” She doesn't understand.
She looked away. “I can walk....Let’s go.” She shakily pulled the door open and peered into the room beyond. “Come on.”

Connor sighed and followed her.
Before he knew what was happening, he was knocked to the floor from behind. Miah cried out, “Connor! Help!”
It was a trap, he thought with a groan. “Run, Miah!” he yelled, and tried to get up. As he stood, he felt a stabbing pain in his back and saw the room tilt before him. He hit the ground hard and closed his eyes.
