The man took a step forward as if to threaten her further, and Miah flinched: but then Connor moved again. “Miah?” The sound of his voice was like music to her ears.
Despite her relief at his awakening, she did not know what to think of him.
“Hey!” the man on his side shouted. “He’s awake, sir.”
The white haired man walked around to Connor’s side.
“Are you alright?” Miah chanced to whisper, turning to him slowly, trying not to further pain her knees beneath the dashboard.
“Yes…just bumped my head, that’s all.” He reached back to feel his scalp, grimacing at the bump he felt there. How dare he only suffer a scratch, when it was his fault!
The man in white stepped up to Connor’s door and opened it; it was unlocked, and he ordered Connor to get out.
Miah closed her eyes and tried not to cry. Too many things that she couldn’t understand were fighting for her thoughts at once. Connor’s harebrained scheme had gone completely wrong; they weren’t supposed to get hurt. Ben was being kept somewhere, but what if she and Connor weren’t contained in the same place as he was once they were captured? What if she and Connor were separated and he couldn’t get to her when they made their supposed escape? They were getting even deeper and deeper into this mess she hadn’t even known about until yesterday.
Connor stepped out of the car and cracked his neck, stretching his arms. He rubbed a cut on his shoulder and looked at the damage done to his car, seemingly oblivious to the fact that he was about to be taken captive. Miah held back the urge to roll her eyes at this guy.
Impatient, the man pointed at Miah angrily. “Your friend can’t walk. Carry her.”
Connor folded his arms and stared at the man, openly defying him.
“Now!” the man yelled. Miah’s ears rung, and she grit her teeth, tears streaming unbidden down her cheeks.
The younger man shoved Connor forward, and he went back around the car to Miah’s side.
“Can’t walk?” The concern in Connor’s voice brought fresh tears to her eyes, and she shook her head, unable to speak.
With a nod, Connor put an arm under her knees and the other by her back, lifting her out of the car. She hesitantly put an arm on his shoulder, and he carried her up the hill and back onto the road where a black car waited.
