Episode 11
Driving down the road, they passed by a Wendy’s. Miah suddenly realized how hungry she was and turned to Connor. “Can we stop and get something to eat soon? I’m famished.”
He nodded. “Alright. But we’ll only go through the drive-through.”
Once they arrived at the drive-through window, Miah remembered that she had no money. “I’ll just get a burger—and I can pay you back,” she added.
He shook his head, “I can handle it.” He ordered and continued to the pickup counter.
They were soon on their way again, and Miah felt much better after having eaten. “So, where are we going?”
“As far away as we can get,” he answered, keeping his eyes on the road.
“Where will we stay the night?”
“I can drive through the night.”
“But—isn’t that dangerous? What if you fall asleep?”
“I won’t.” He gave a reassuring smile.
Miah looked uneasily at the signs they passed on the interstate. They were getting further and further away from home. Soon they crossed the state border and were heading north. The sun started to go down, and she was tired.
Connor flipped the headlights on and looked over at her. She’d fallen asleep, and her light brown hair fell in her face. He thought again of his promise to her to rescue Ben, and he looked at the road again. What he had promised was next to impossible. Did she know that?
He’d seen the way Ben made her eyes light up. The way she’d looked at him. And then the way she had looked upon him in fear when he spoke of killing, and he clutched the wheel tighter as he remembered her words. Was he wrong? What if there was really nothing he, a boy lost in the world, could do to stop these manic terrorists from putting substance to their plots?
He remembered her face again, her mortification, and he wanted to smash something. It was all his fault. And she was right.
