Some time in the night, Miah heard a noise. She closed her eyes and tried to fall asleep again, but then she heard footsteps right behind her. She rolled over, “Connor—”
Suddenly, someone grabbed her, and something was held against her mouth. She struggled and tried to call out, but the room began to fade into a mist of sleep.
Connor jumped up from the corner where he had been trying to fall asleep. “Miah!” he gasped, and ran at the guards. “Stop!” He tried to get to her, but two men held him back. He struggled, but they threw him to the ground and left the room.
Gasping for breath, Connor picked himself up off the floor and walked to the door, stopping it just before it closed. He ran through and looked for the men who had carried her away. Seeing no one, he paused to catch his breath and then hurried through a hallway that looked promising. And ran.
