Episode 21

“Do you think they’ll bring us food?” Miah asked.

Connor paced the floor, thinking. “Mm…well, they can’t starve us, can they? We’re valuable to them.”

“True.”

Connor looked up at the window, which was over ten feet high. “If only I could jump up and try to see out…”

“It’s too small for you to fit through, even if you could get up to it,” Miah sighed, rubbing her knee.

“But…agh, you’re right. Well, the window wouldn’t work.”

“Let’s not try to get out just yet, okay?  Let’s wait until I can walk again.”

“But what if you don’t?  You should have been brought to the emergency room the minute you got out of that car.  Nurses would know if you needed a cast, or if it could get infected, or if you needed a splint or something.  There’s nothing we can do about it here; there’s nothing in this room but what we brought with us.”

“By the way, what had been your plan to get out with Ben?”

Connor shook his head. “Never mind that. It can’t help us now.”

Miah shrugged. “Fine with me.”

He sat down against the wall of the window and looked at her. “Well, it seems we’ll be stuck here for awhile.”

She nodded. “No action for awhile, I guess.”

“Yeah.” Connor rolled his eyes. “Unless we think of a subject, this is going to be one boring day.” He thought for a moment, and then asked, “What do you like to do?”

Miah smiled. “Hm. I like music.”

“Oh? Listening to music, playing it, or singing?”

“Pretty much all three.” She grinned. “I’ve been taking harp lessons.”

“That’s cool.   My dad once tried to teach me guitar, but I failed miserably.  I...suppose that's not exactly my thing.”

She laughed, “I guess. You into music much?”

“Nah.  I was more into my karate class and video games than music.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah, not very much. I like listening to music, I just can’t play anything.” Connor looked up at the wall, thinking back.

“Can you sing?” she asked hopefully.

“Can a fish fly?” he smirked.

Miah smiled knowingly, “Well actually, there is a fish—”

Connor shook his head and laughed. “Psh, you know-it-all.”

She rolled her eyes.  “So how old are you?  And do you have a job?”

“Well...”

There was a creak, and they both jerked and looked at the door, which opened wide. Gail walked in.

“Follow me, you’re going to eat out here.”
