Nightmares raked through Miah’s sleep, the flashing memories and lingering anxieties bringing her to tears. She was flying, she was diving, she was struggling, she was dying. Imaginations of her half-crazed mind drove her to the edge and back again, a tug of war between sanity and what she dared not admit to herself.
Suddenly she woke with a shock; a stream of freezing cold rainwater had blown in from the outside and onto her feet. She sat up quickly with a shudder and pulled herself further from the opening, forcing herself to breathe. Her dreams came back to memory, and she shivered and held her head, huddling in the dark corner.
Did I do the right thing in leaving? What if Ben really isn’t as bad as Connor said he was? What if Connor was lying? What am I going to do?
She tried not to think about it. I can’t do much right now with the rain anyway. Miah looked around her. Rain still fell in sheets outside, the wind blowing it across her view and threatening to blow it her way. She looked around the cave, something disturbing her thoughts, but she couldn’t figure out what was wrong.

Suddenly she realized that Connor was nowhere to be seen.
“Connor?” she called out, pushing herself to her feet. He’s not here!! Where did he go?? She stumbled out to the roadside, screaming into the rain, “CONNOR?!?”
