The two of them slowly walked down the road. Connor didn’t know exactly where he would go, only that right now, putting more distance between them and Ben was a higher priority than pure direction.
The moon rose over them, and a calm breeze blew through the trees as they walked down the shoulder of the highway. Slowly, it strengthened into a steady wind, causing Miah to pull her hair back from her face. “Do you think it’s going to rain?” she asked.
“I hope not…” Connor looked around at the gathering clouds. It was slippery enough on the steep parts of the road without rain to make it all worse. “If it does start to rain, we’ll have to get under cover of some kind…”
“Yeah…” Miah shivered.
“You know,” Connor thought aloud, “you’d think we’d have passed a gas station by now or something.”
“We’re going the opposite direction. We’ve already passed this—”
“Yeah, I know, but in going the other direction, shouldn’t we have found one? It seems like we’ve gone so far…” In looking down, Connor's bangs blew into his face, so he looked up.
Miah sighed. “We walked about four or five hours before…there just aren’t as many gas stations around here.”
Connor let out an exasperated breath, and looked over at the side of the road close to the mountain. “Well, over there, part of the cliff hangs over. That’ll be the best cover we're going to find out here.”
“Okay.”
