She didn’t want to open her eyes, and she groaned as someone shook her by the shoulders. “Leave me alone,” she murmured, and the person patted her face.
“Wake up!”
Miah opened her eyes, glaring at Ben. “Sorry, you just needed to wake up.” Miah rolled her eyes sleepily and pushed herself into a sitting position to look around.
Connor lay where she had seen him last, pale and still. She remembered the darkness the night before, and the smoke in her eyes...
“Is he okay?” she asked, crawling over to his side.
Ben shrugged, “He looks dead.”
She shot him an angry look, and he put his hands up. “Just saying.”
“Don’t say that,” she snapped as she tried to feel for his pulse. After a few tries, she found she could feel a steady beat, if slow. “He’s alive,” she sighed.
Ben looked around at the road. “Have you seen any cars go by?” he asked.
“No,” Miah shook her head. Looking over at him, she asked, “Do you think we should try walking further up the road?”
“With Connor?”
She looked down at him. “Well, it’s not like we could leave him here…we’ll just have to wait for a car to come by, I suppose.”
Ben sighed. “Okay.”
So they waited.
