They walked around the bend in the road and out of sight. Connor looked at the ground and took a step forward. The pain in his gut stabbed him again and he tensed, falling to his knees. He took his hand from his side and stared at the blood dripping from his fingers. His stomach churned and he held his side again, getting back on his feet. The world was fuzzy for a moment, and he almost fell over again, but he stood and looked ahead. His vision seemed cloudy; he blinked and stared at the place where she had disappeared.
Why is she doing this? Why doesn’t she just be rid of him? How could she love him after what he’s done? He doesn’t even seem sorry. All he cares about is himself. She must be going crazy.
But should I go on? Is it worth it? Could I convince her? I could go back.
He stood undecided as he stared at the bend in the road. “No,” he said aloud, “I’ve got to go after her.”
Connor took another painful step forward, biting his tongue, and then another step, and another; he kept his eyes on the road ahead and didn’t look back.
