Connor lay propped up against the cliff wall staring out at the steady rain. The overhang of the cliff kept the droplets from coming in, but it couldn't keep out the cold. Miah had fallen asleep almost instantly, and he had decided to keep watch in case either Ben or any of their enemy’s men should come upon them in the dark.
The rain was soothing, its lulling rhythm tempting him to doze. Connor blinked when he found his eyelids closing. He yawned and repositioned himself, wincing at the pain in his side, and then settled back down, scratching his head.
He looked over at Miah. It was dark, but he could make out her form lying against the wall a few feet away from him. Connor sighed, resting his elbows on his knees and leaning his head back against the cliff wall, looking up.
She wanted to go home; he could understand that. But could things ever be the way they were before? Surely she knew they could not. She could try to reacclimate to her previous life, but there were so many things that had changed, not only emotionally, but physically. She had metal legs, for crying out loud. How much more non-human could she get, besides adding a few more metal parts? If I were her, I'd run away and join a group of people like me somewhere. But she obviously can't cope on her own, she needs to have someone to hold onto.
How am I going to do this?
