Connor heard a twig snap and his eyes snapped open. Sitting up slowly, he saw that Gail was not where she had been; he stood and looked toward the tree where Ben and Miah had been.
Miah felt Ben shaking her awake. “Miah, we have to go, now!!”
“What—what is it?” He was pulling her, and she got to her feet. “Ben, wait—”
“Just run!!”
She clung to his arm, and he pulled her along, running a bit closer to the gaping crevice than she would have liked. She heard gunshots in the distance, coming closer.
And then it hit her.
“How did they find us?” she gasped.
“I have no idea. But Connor’s gone after them—we have to get away, now while we have the chance!”
“Connor’s back there?!?” She stopped, and Ben stumbled to a halt. “We have to help him!!” She ran back as best as she could, driven more through fear than courage.
“Miah!! You can’t go back, you’ll get killed!” Ben shouted back at her.
“Do you want Connor to be?” She looked back, and in the approaching dawn she could make out Ben’s frustrated face.
“He can handle them. You can’t. Please, he’s holding them back for you! Don’t go back, Miah!” He ran to her, his eyes pleading. “Please.”
Staring at him, she shook her head. “No.”
She turned to go, but Ben grabbed her wrist. “Miah. Forget him. He’s not who you think he is—”
Miah twisted away, crying, “He’s more than you think!”
“Miah!” he screamed, clutching his head in his hands.
