Episode 42

When the ground began to level out, Ben had slowed down.  Surveying the mountains around, a bit of a plan was forming in his head.  He looked around at the thinning forest before them, and then looked back at the others.  He saw Miah standing directly behind him, looking around.  He blinked; she had walked up so quietly.

“Do you think we’re close?” she asked, scratching her arm.

Ben took a deep breath of the pine forest air and looked out at the mountains around the valley.  “Maybe.  But if a road cut through here, it would pass through that gap over there—” he pointed to a point where the mountains separated to reveal the clouded sky— “so we should head in more or less that direction.”

She nodded, looking around.  “And then what?”  He turned to her, and she looked down.  “Like…after we find the road, do we just…wait for someone to drive by?”

He looked back at the gap.  “We have to find a road first.”

Miah sighed. “Yes.”

Connor caught up with them, looking around at the mountains from their position.  “So, do we have our trajectory?”

Ben rolled his eyes at his vocabulary boasting long hours watching action movies and nodded toward the gap.  “Toward there—most likely place they’d build a road around here.  And if there isn’t a road, we’ll be able to get out of this valley through the gap.”

Connor nodded slowly, summing up the distance.  “We might run out of food by the time we’ve walked all that way.”

“Then let’s pray there’s a road,” Ben murmured.

Gail soon caught up with them, and they continued along the sloping valley floor, hoping they would find a road in time.
